“All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence you know.” – Ernest Hemingway
Great advice from Master Hemingway, isn’t it? Just write that TRUE sentence and you’re off to a great start.
If I could interview Mr. Hemingway, I’d ask him what makes a sentence ring TRUE.
Is it structure? – A crisp, unadorned sentence? Like “Jesus wept.”
Is it style? – A sentence that captures your feelings perfectly?
Is it a truth you’ve stumbled upon that has left you speechless?
What is a true sentence?
I wish he weren’t so vague about it. I liked him better when he was plain and blunt about writing – ‘First draft of anything is shit.” Can’t get it simpler than that.
Is that a true sentence, I wonder?
This will be my homework for this week.
Find my truest sentence. And then go from there.
